Gun Violence Continues Plaguing the Twin Cities

Minnesotans are tired of the needless gun violence that plagues our streets and continues to take innocent lives. In what has become all too familiar for residents, the sound of gunshots could be heard throughout the North Minneapolis area on Wednesday afternoon. The dispute, which started amongst two young neighborhood teens, ended with one being transported to a nearby hospital where he later died from fatal gunshot wounds.

Even worse, the victim, London Bean, was twelve years old.

Once again community members and local leaders are calling for an end to the gun violence, but many residents are wondering why Governor Walz hasn’t been more vocal about this gun pandemic.

Over the last year, police data shows “41 children under 18 have been struck by gunfire—seven of them fatally.” Despite the alarming homicide statistics and rise in violent crime, calls to defund the police are at an all time high and in large part to Governor Walz using officers as scapegoats, confidence in law enforcement has diminished causing many officers to turn in their papers in favor of retirement.

At the same time, with officers stretched thin, crime running rampant, and a lack of community trust in officer capabilities, crime has gone unfettered. As an elected official and the leader of our state, Governor Walz owes it to Minnesota residents to support law enforcement officers and address the rise in crime. If not, businesses will cease to exist in the Twin Cities and tourism will plummet causing even more undue harm to the surrounding communities.
